Hundreds of kilos of suspected crystal meth have been seized at Cork Port.

It follows a joint operation between An Garda Síochána and Revenue's Customs Service this morning.

More than 540kg of synthetic drugs, with an estimated value of €32.8 million, were seized.

Two men were arrested in a number of follow-up searches in Kerry and Cork.

The men, both aged in their 40s, are currently detained at Garda stations in Kerry under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A follow-on operation, investigating drug trafficking and organised crime offences, is currently being conducted by Gardaí from the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit.

Two guns have also been seized.

If the drugs are confirmed as crystal meth it will be by far the biggest-ever seizure of the drug in Ireland.

At this stage it is not known if the drugs were manufactured here and were to be transported to another country.
