Just after Christmas 2024, Lucy Harrison travelled from her home in Cheshire in the north of England to visit her father in Texas.
It was a visit she had made a number of times before, but this time would be her last.
A few weeks later in January, on the day she was due to leave America for England, people in the house heard a loud bang from her father’s bedroom.
It turned out Ms Harrison had been shot and she died not long afterwards in hospital.
Kris Harrison claimed he picked up his gun and it went off by accident; he had no idea it was loaded and was an inexperienced gun owner.
The police concluded it was an accident and they decided no charges would be taken against Lucy’s father.
However, a coroner in her native Britain concluded that her death amounted to unlawful killing and that her father had likely committed gross negligence manslaughter under British law.
Ms Harrison’s family have now travelled to Texas, urging authorities to re-open their case against her father.
Speaking to Sky News, Ms Harrison’s mother, Jane Coates, said she felt “so incredibly let down” and “angry” at US authorities.
“I feel that Lucy is being let down and she deserves so much more than that,” she said.
“The one thing that I can give back to Lucy is her voice and that is what I'm going to continue to keep on trying to do.”
Sky News correspondent Greg Milam said the family also want it known that Ms Harrison and her father had a difficult relationship at times, disagreeing over issues such as Donald Trump and gun rights.
“It was never alleged that that featured in what happened with the shooting as such,” Mr Milam told The Claire Byrne Show.
“But certainly Lucy's mother would say that there was a tense relationship over the years between Lucy and her father.
“They also say that there's no way she would have wanted to see a gun. Kris Harrison said that his daughter had asked to see the gun that he kept beside his bed.
“Lucy's family said that simply wouldn't happen; she hated guns [and] wouldn't have wanted to see it.”
Ms Harrison’s family have also raised concerns about her father’s alcohol intake on the day of her death.
“Police officers recognised they smelled alcohol on Chris Harrison's breath when they were called to that shooting,” Mr Milam explained.
“They never carried out a breathalyzer test, they never carried out a blood test.
“Kris Harrison admitted in evidence to the inquest that he relapsed and had been drinking on that day.
“That's just one of those features that didn't didn't come up in the police investigation as far as Lucy's family are concerned.”
Mr Milam stressed that these concerns “come from Lucy's family” and that while Sky News had tried to speak to Mr Harrison, he has not got back to them.
“Certainly, the belief from the coroner in the UK who looked at all of this evidence is that Kris Harrison was at the very least teasing his daughter with this gun,” Mr Milam said.
“At that point, somehow his finger came to be on the trigger and the gun was fired with those fatal consequences.”
