An investigation is underway following an attempted ATM robbery in Co Louth.

It happened in the early hours of this morning on Irish Street in Ardee.

Gardaí say they received a report of an attempt to remove an ATM from a bank at around 4:50am.

The attempted robbery is said to have caused a 'significant amount of damage' to the building.

A digger and a tractor remain at the scene, while a 4x4 vehicle was found burnt out a short distance away.

Nobody has yet been arrested in connection with the incident.

The scene remains closed off this morning to allow for a technical exam.

Gardaí say they're now looking to talk to anybody who noticed anything unusual in Ardee between 3am and 5am this morning.

Anyone with information can contact Ardee Garda Station on 041-687-1130, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.
