The Independents Alliance has been formerly launched, but "under no circumstances is it a party," according to Shane Ross TD, one of the group's membership.

Ross explained to Lunchtime what the new group was, what it was not, and its aims.

It will see TDs, Senators and Councillors contest the next general election with a view to becoming part of a coalition Government.

The group won't apply a whip to members except under votes of confidence.

Independent Senator Feargal Quinn has agreed to become the Parliamentary Chairman of the grouping - though he says he does not intend to contest either the next general election or the subsequent election to the Seanad.

Mr Quinn explained to reporters this afternoon why he has decided to get involved with the group, even if not planning to contest another election.
