Employees at Google's Dublin office have been advised to work from home tomorrow after a member of staff reported flu-like symptoms.

The company, which employs around 8,000 people in Ireland, could not confirm whether the individual has Covid-19.

Anyone who was in close contact with the employee has been asked to work from home and to monitor their health until more is known about the person's condition.

Google also plans to use the day to test its preparedness to dealing with a potential case of coronavirus to ensure it is able to be fully functional should employees need to work from home over an extended period of time.

A company spokesperson said: “We continue to take precautionary measures to protect the health and safety of our workforce, and as part of that effort we have asked our Dublin teams to work from home tomorrow.”

Other Google offices around the world have previously taken similar measures in response to the outbreak of the virus.

Offices in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan have previously been closed temporarily, with other tech companies also exercising caution.

Google has also implemented travel restrictions for staff travelling to certain locations over virus fears.

'Moderate to high' risk

Meanwhile, the European Centre for Disease Control confirmed today that the risk of people contracting coronavirus in the coming weeks is "moderate to high".

Department of Health officials told a coronavirus briefing this evening that there is still only one confirmed case in the Republic.

A Dublin secondary school has been closed as a precaution to stop the spread of the coronavirus after a male student was confirmed as the first case of Covid-19 here.

Siblings and parents of students at the school can continue their daily routine as normal.

That is according to the National Public Health Emergency Team, which says they are not regarded as contacts and Ireland remains in a containment phase.

The group will meet again tomorrow to consider giving guidance on mass gatherings, while Health Minister Simon Harris will brief the cabinet.
