A healthcare worker unable to get to work has said he fears about the fuel protest could delay women in labour getting to hospital.

On Lunchtime Live, Bill said that he called into work this morning to tell them the fuel protest would prevent him from driving in.

He added that while he understands both sides of the argument, he worries about the impact the blockades are having on the health service.

“They say, ‘Well, we're letting emergency services through the ambulances’ and so on,” he said.

“Now, that's fine - but who's going to be in the hospitals to meet those ambulances? Who's going to be there to help those patients?”

Bill urged the fuel protestors to compromise and let through people who work in the health service.

“I'd just like to propose some sort of a solution,” he said.

“Government, the protesters and the army, they need some sort of methods to allow at least health care workers to get into work.

“Because there's no point in ambulances getting by and then staff and health care staff being stuck in traffic amongst thousands of people.”

Bill added that he is particularly worried that women in labour might be delayed getting into hospital.

“I have children and remember the panic, in the lead up to their mother going into labour and trying to get them to the hospital on time,” he said.

“So, how many women and fathers to be are in that situation right now?

“I've heard of people who need dialysis and they're stuck as well. They can't travel.”
