Florence + The Machine will headline the Friday night of the Glastonbury Festival after previous headliners Foo Fighters were forced to cancel tour dates.

Organiser Emily Eavis said, “once we heard the sad news that Foo Fighters had been forced to pull out, there was only one person we wanted to call and that was Florence. Every time she has played here she’s done something spectacular and we always knew she would headline the Pyramid one day.

"I’m delighted she’s agreed to step up to it – she’s going to smash it," she added.

The Foo Fighters cancelled their headline slot at the festival - which is taking place from the 24th to the 28th of June - after frontman Dave Grohl broke his leg.

The band have also been forced to pull out of all remaining shows on their UK and European tour, including at Wembley Stadium in London and Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Grohl injured himself when he fell off the stage but managed to keep performing at a gig in the Ullevi Stadium in Sweden on 12 June.

Writing on the band's official website about the cancellations, Grohl wrote, "you know I hate to do it, but I’m afraid it’s just not physically possible for me at the moment. We’re doing our best right now to work out a plan, so bear with us.

"You know we’re good for our word. But for now, I need to make sure we have YEARS of gigs ahead of us," he assured fans.
