Latest poll sees drop in support for Fine Gael, surge for Sinn Féin

There has been a drop in support for Fine Gael and a surge in Sinn Féin's popularity, according to the latest opinion poll.

The Business Post/Red C poll suggests Fianna Fáil is up by two points to 26%.

This puts the party ahead of Fine Gael which is on 23%, a drop seven points.

Sinn Féin has gained eight points and is now on 19%.

The telephone poll of 1,000 voters was conducted between January 16th and 22nd.

US basketball legend Kobe Bryant has died in a helicopter crash in the Californian suburb of Calabasas.

Eight people died after the aircraft went down in a remote field at around 10 am local time today, according to officials.

US media reported that Mr Bryant's 13-year-old daughter Gianna Marie was also on board and died in the crash.

President warns of 'ugly anti-migrant sentiment' in Ireland ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day

President Michael D Higgins has commemorated National Holocaust Memorial Day which marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Survivors of the Holocaust will gather at the former camp tomorrow along with world leaders and dignitaries to remember the 1.1 million people who were killed by the Nazis there during World War 2.

Speaking at the Mansion House in Dublin this evening, President Higgins said it was important to "respectfully and solemnly commemorate those who died or suffered at the hands of the Nazis" and to ensure that we "do all we can to ensure that such a horror never occurs again".

Gardaí say post-mortem examinations have been carried out on the bodies of three children found dead at a house in south-west Dublin.

They have been named as brothers Conor (aged 9), Darragh (7) and sister Carla (3) McGinley.

The discovery was made at Parsons Court in Newcastle on Friday night.

Gardaí say interim post-mortem results are not being published for operational reasons - while they await further toxicology results.

Doherty: Decision to expel member of Young Fine Gael "silly"

Social Protection Minister Regina Doherty has said a decision to expel a member of Young Fine Gael from the party was "silly".

Jude Perry, the son of former Fine Gael minister of state John Perry, said his membership was cancelled because he supported an independent candidate.

His father is running as an independent in the general election.
