Fine Gael has proposed a 'year of the invitation' in 2023 to mark the tenth anniversary of The Gathering tourism initiative.

The Gathering in 2013 saw thousands of events held across the country, aimed in particular at encouraging members of the Irish diaspora to visit Ireland.

In their election manifesto published today, Fine Gael suggested the year-long event "caught the imagination of the Irish people".

The party says it helped "kick-start the strong revival of our tourism sector.

They're now proposing "The Year of the Invitation" in 2023 - describing it as "a global invitation to visit Ireland on the 10-year anniversary of The Gathering".

Tourism officials have previously suggested The Gathering saw 'at least 250,000 to 275,000' extra tourists visiting the country, generating an estimated revenue of €170 million.

However, the initiative also drew some criticism in the lead-up to 2013 - with Irish actor and former cultural ambassador Gabriel Byrne claiming people were "sick to death of being asked to help out in what they regard as a scam".

He argued that the bridge between Ireland and its diaspora was broken, and that those with Irish heritage were not receptive to being "shaken down" for money.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary, meanwhile, made headlines for suggesting The Gathering should be re-named 'The Grabbing' - sharply criticising an increase in charges at Dublin Airport.

However, Mr O'Leary also added that his company thought the overall initiative "wasn't a bad idea".
