The brother of an Irishman seriously ill in a Greek hospital does not “even know if he's getting enough food”.
Last month, 52-year-old Keith Twomey was hit by a car while on holiday in Rhodes; he suffered five fractures and has a long recovery ahead of him.
His family are desperate to bring the Corkman back to Ireland but have encountered serious obstacles.
“The head injury is probably one of our biggest worries, really,” his brother, Graham Twomey, told Lunchtime Live.
“That's getting worse and we know this because we ring his mobile phone and he just isn't making sense.”
Mr Twomey added that they are also concerned about the quality of care he is receiving in Greece, which they do not feel is of the same standard as that in Cork.
“They expect families to actually be there to feed and do all that stuff,” he said.
“When we ring now, they just go, ‘When are you taking your brother home?’
“So, they're not mending him, they're sedating him while all these bones are incorrectly mending and his brain problem is the problem.”
The family paid €37,500 to a company recommended with the HSE that carries out medical repatriations.
However, unfortunately, it was unable to go ahead.
“Then we got a WhatsApp now, firstly, not a phone call, saying your brother isn't fit to fly,” Mr Twomey said.
“I suppose the reason I'm telling you this is this is compounding a really, really terrible situation for the family.”
Mr Twomey continued that he now spends his days on the phone to officials asking them for help.
So far, none have been able to get Keith home.
“Get the ball rolling here,” Mr Twomey urged.
“We're four weeks in; it's an EU citizen lying in a bed, four weeks lying in a bed, which is serious in itself, going crazy and deteriorating every day.
“We don't even know if he's getting enough food.”
The HSE has been contacted for comment.
