Former Northern Ireland deputy first minister Seamus Mallon dies

The former deputy first minister for Northern Ireland Seamus Mallon has died aged 83.

His SDLP party announced the news in a statement on Friday.

Paying tribute, President Michael D Higgins said: "His reputation as a politician and community activist of unsurpassed courage, civility and fairness is held by all those who had the privilege of knowing him."

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said Ireland had "lost one of its most fierce champions for justice, equality and peace".

Bodies of three children discovered at house in Dublin

A Garda investigation is underway after the bodies of three children - two boys and a girl - were discovered in Dublin.

The discovery was made at a house in Newcastle, with emergency services currently at the scene.

A woman in her 40s has been taken to Tallaght Hosptial.

High Court approves extradition of Irishman facing charges over Essex lorry deaths

The High Court has approved the surrender of an Irish man to UK authorities in connection with the discovery of 39 bodies in the back of a lorry in Essex.

The order for Eamon Harrison's extradition hasn't been signed yet so his lawyers can consider an appeal.

Eamon Harrison from Mayobridge in County Down is wanted in the UK to face 39 manslaughter charges as well as charges relating to human trafficking and illegal immigration.

Fine Gael has launched the party's election manifesto.

It promises to raise the point at which people pay the higher rate of tax to €50,000.

Free GP care for under-18s, a transitional payment for older people until they reach pension are and the recruitment of 700 Gardaí a year over the next five years also feature.

Fianna Fáil commits to housing and childcare in GE2020 manifesto

Fianna Fáil has launched its election manifesto, promising not to spend the projected €11bn available over the next five years.

The party has committed to a four-to-one ratio of spending increases vs tax cuts.

Housing promises include an SSIA savings scheme, a large affordable rental housing scheme and retaining the help-to-buy scheme.
