Government defers planned RIC commemoration
The planned commemoration of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) is being deferred, the Justice Minister has confirmed.
An 'alternative' event will be organised for later this year.
It follows strong opposition to the planned event on 17th January.
A number of opposition parties and commentators had raised their objections to the proposed commemoration for the RIC and the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP).
“Extreme overcrowding crisis” as 760 patients wait for hospital bed
The Health Minister has rejected claims from nurses that the current hospital overcrowding crisis was predictable and could have been avoided.
760 people were waiting for a bed in Ireland’s hospitals this morning according the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation – the same record number that reported yesterday.
The situation has seen four hospitals forced to cancel elective procedures in order to cope with the number of people presenting to their emergency departments.
The INMO has warned that its members are once again “working in impossible conditions,” noting that the situation was “entirely predictable” and should have been avoided.
Veteran RTÉ presenter Larry Gogan has died, the broadcaster has announced.
He was 81-years-old.
He worked in broadcasting for almost six decades.
He was a DJ on the digital radio station RTÉ Gold, having previously worked on 2FM.
Varadkar and Martin to meet on election timing
The Taoiseach will meet with the Fianna Fáil leader on Thursday to discuss the timing of the upcoming general election, according to the Finance Minister.
While Leo Varadkar has previously mentioned May as his preferred election date, Micheál Martin has suggested the vote should be held after Easter.
Speaking on The Hard Shoulder this afternoon, the Fianna Fáil leader said he believes other parties could agree to keep the Dáil going until April - but the Taoiseach would need to set out that plan.
Deputy Martin said: "From the moment I entered into confidence and supply with the Fine Gael party, I said I would behave honourably and I would honour the agreement - and I have.
Funeral mass held for Marian Finucane
Marian Finucane has been described as an icon of Irish broadcasting at her funeral mass in Co Kildare.
Hundreds of mourners from the world of politics and public life attended the funeral of the 69-year-old in Kill.
She passed away suddenly at her home last Thursday.
Her funeral took place at St Brigid's Church and was followed by a private burial.
