'Don't come after our staff' Taoiseach warns, after suspicious package at Department of Health

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has strongly criticised people who send suspicious packages in the post to public figures.

It comes after the Defence Forces said a suspicious powder sent to the Department of Health in Dublin city centre earlier was non-hazardous.

The department re-opened after an earlier evacuation, when a suspicious package was sent to Health Minister Simon Harris earlier.

Minister Richard Bruton aims to introduce a new Online Safety Commissioner – with powers to fine and issue criminal proceedings against any company that fails to remove harmful content.

In a speech in Kildare this morning, Minister Bruton will say it is time to move away from self-regulation by social media giants like Facebook and Twitter.

Over 1,000 live turtles seized by customs officials in the Philippines

Customs officials in the Philippines have seized 1,529 live exotic turtles - many of whom were tied together by duct tape.

The animals were discovered on Sunday by the country's Bureau of Customs at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

They were then turned over to its Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit.
