The Dublin Airport Authority is “hopeful” the airport’s check in process will return to normal following a weekend of disruption.

On Saturday, the airport was hit by a cyber security attack - alongside a number of other European airports - that has impacted the check in and boarding systems.

As a result, some airlines have resorted to manually issuing bagtags and boarding passes.

On Newstalk Breakfast, DAA spokesperson Graeme McQueen said the airport is “not expecting too much” disruption today.

“There are still manual processes in play with some of the airlines - mainly Aer Lingus Terminal 2,” he explained.

“This is a customer facing system that operates on boarding cards and distribution of check-in tickets and things like that.

“So, it’s had a pretty big impact over the weekend; they are working on a fix but it’s quite complicated.

“It’s taking a bit of time; we don’t have an ETA yet as to when this is all going to be sorted.

“But we’re hopeful we might have one today and we can go back to normal as soon as possible.”

For those travelling through Dublin Airport today, Mr McQueen advised them to do as much as possible before they arrive at the airport.

“If you can avoid bagdrop, if you can avoid checking a bag in at the airport, do that as well,” he suggested.

“That’s going to make it easier for you.

“Everything else at the airport is working fine; security is moving really quickly.”

Also on Saturday, Terminal 2 was evacuated as a "precautionary measure" after a suspicious item of luggage had been flagged by airport staff.

Gardaí and the Army’s explosive disposal team were called in to deal with the situation.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Mr McQueen said airport staff operate from a “safety first” position.

“We don’t scrimp on security at all; there was an alert for a bag that was in the airport,” he said.

“The decision was taken and an evacuation had to take place; that was done quickly [and] safely.”
