Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien is expected to survive a motion of no confidence to be debated in the Dáil this evening.

People Before Profit tabled the motion on the grounds that housing crisis has worsened during his two year tenure as a minister.

“We now have record house prices; we have record rents and we have record levels of homelessness,” Paul Murphy TD told Newstalk.

“It’s absolutely clear that the Government’s approach to housing is a complete failure.

“It has achieved only one thing which is to channel public money into the hands of big corporate landlords and big private developers.”

The Government will present a countermotion today expressing confidence in Darragh O'Brien.

It will cite the increased level of home completions this year and the fact 16,000 first time buyers have got on the property ladder over the past year - the highest number since the financial crash.

The Government currently has an official Dáil majority of just one vote; however, no confidence motion in the lifetime of this coalition has been that close and Minister Darragh O'Brien is expected to survive comfortably.
