The 345th Lord Mayor of Dublin is in his final day in office.

Christy Burke, who was elected on June 6th in 2014, will step down at approximately 7:30pm this evening.

Mr Burke has been heavily involved with several campaigns during his tenure - including the issues of homelessness and housing.

But he says there has been no real changes made in the number of homeless on the city streets.

"At this moment in time, there is a huge shortfall in the homeless budget" he said.

"There was a 25 million of a commitment promised by (Minister) Alan Kelly to both myself and city manager, and indeed to the media, up in Parkgate Hall after the death of Jonathan Corrie - that has not come home to roost" he added.

He has also hit out at proposals to raise clamping fees in the capital as "insulting" and "totally unacceptable".

The Lord Mayor has also said he hopes the Catalan region of Spain will get independence.

Speaking in May, Mr Burke said: "The ballot box is a wonderful thing...Catalans can do that, the ballot box speaks volumes".

Asked about whether the Spanish government will allow a referendum for independence in Catalonia, Mr Burke said: "I would hope so, you deserve your independence, you deserve your self-determination".

And Mr Burke says he will stand as a "purely Independent" candidate in the next general election for Dublin Central.

He spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime about his last day as Lord Mayor.

One Facebook user has even made a tribute video to Mr Burke:

Thank you so much to Daniel St Ledger for this video, you just made today. Question is how did you get the flag on the hill in the video amazing Thank so muchChristy Burke
