A cardiologist has given his top tips to transform your health, a question he says he gets asked “all of the time”.

Dr Paddy Barrett  of Black Rock Clinic said these are all things that work for him personally and will not necessarily for anyone else.

The first recommendation is simple - get enough sleep, which he believes has meant “huge payoffs” over the years.

“Basically going to bed and getting up at the exact same time every single night and getting up at the same time - seven days [a week],” he suggested on The Claire Byrne Show.

The next one is to make sure you remain active, which will boost a person’s mood, as well their physical health.

“The impact in terms of quality of life leverage, that that single change has meant for me, which is a big, big change,” he said.

“And I fought tooth and nail in terms of being dragged, kicking and screaming into it.

“Doing all those things again has been just this massive, profound impact in terms of the quality of my life.

“[It is], in terms of your health span, in terms of the things that you will be able to do in the future, just absolutely worth that.”

Another thing he has done is cut down on the amount of alcohol he drinks; while he is not teetotal, it is unusual to see him with a pint in his hand.

“My enthusiasm for this particular activity was very significant when I was younger,” he admitted.

“I have many emergency department presentations and broken limbs on my record to go with that.

“But again, the big reason that I reduced it to almost zero is, again, the quality of my day.

“So, I can enjoy a drink, share a kind of a nice drink with family and friends, and I still get all the benefits and none of the real downside.

“But this idea of drinking for drinking's sake has just disappeared.”
