A man has been arrested following a hijacking incident in Dublin early on Tuesday morning.

It happened at the junction of the South Circular Road and Donore Avenue in Dublin 8 at around 2.45am.

A 43-year-old male taxi driver picked up a fare on the Crumlin Road to go to the Dolphins Barn area.

The male passenger then told the taxi driver to pull over and that he had a gun and placed an object to the taxi driver's head.

The keys of the car were handed over, and the man drove off in the taxi.

The car was located in a car park on the Kylemore Road, Ballyfermot and a short time later a 24-year-old man was arrested nearby.

He is currently being held at Sundrive Road garda station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.

No firearm was recovered and investigations are continuing.
