Mary Lou McDonald's solution to the housing crisis is nothing short of "fantasy economics", a Fine Gael TD has said.

Limerick City TD Kieran O'Donnell hit out at the Sinn Féin party leader following her appearance on The Late Late Show.

Deputy O'Donnell said that the party must have "a secret stash of billions" to consider building over 100,000 social homes in five years.

“Sinn Féin’s reckless plans to impose rent and price controls, ban external and internal investment funds completely disregards sensible economic planning", he said.

"In reality, Sinn Féin consistently object to housing projects so they’d be the first obstacle to their own uncosted proposals."

Northern Ireland

Deputy O'Donnell said that voters need only look to the North to see that Sinn Féin's strategy won't work.

"If you look at Sinn Féin's own performance in the North to date, they've very much failed in housing", he said.

"There was only 835 new homes built between 2021 and 2022, they have three times the number of people on the housing waiting list than we have down here."

"How can you trust a leader of a party that effectively their policies are not grounded in reality?"

"I don't think you can trust them with any part of the economy, or particularly housing."

'Crash the country'

According to the Fine Gael deputy, Sinn Féin would “crash the country and destroy our competitive, consistent, and transparent corporate tax regime and foreign direct investment".

“Sinn Féin are yet again putting forward unworkable and uncosted policies that would lead to the financial and economic destruction of this country if they were imposed", he said.

"They are a high tax, anti-jobs party who would wreck the economy if given the chance."

He reaffirmed his party's oath to never enter into a coalition with Sinn Féin as the two parties are "incompatible".

“Whatever happens, Fine Gael will work hard to ensure our economy stays strong, so we have resources to help with the cost of living, vital public services, and public infrastructure like housing.”
