Newstalk has learned 400 new jobs are to be announced tomorrow in a new call centre providing customer services to Irish Water.

Bord Gais has responsibility for setting up the new water company.

It will formally seek tenders from 3rd parties to set up the new centre.

It will be based somewhere in the State but the location ultimately depends on who wins the tender.

Around 100 of the jobs will be in place by the middle of next year.

The remainder 300 will come on-stream by mid-2014 when water charges are planned to be introduced.

The call centre will be operated independently of Bord Gais/Irish Water.

This is similar to the way that Bord Gais customer services is currently outsourced to Kerry-based company Fexco.

Newstalk’s Political Editor Shane Coleman explained more to The Right Hook.
