The Irish motor industry is having its strongest trading year since before the recession, according to the latest Motor Industry Review from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

Some 150,000 new motors have been sold thus far in 2016.

The Motor Industry Review also looks at the projected figures for next year.

At the start of the month, SIMI reported that the number of 161 registrations had reached 101,338. This marked a 23% increase on 151 registrations.

Despite the positive news in 2016, the fallout from the Brexit vote could spell bad news for sales in 2017.

SIMI Director General Alan Nolan has said the UK referendum has already taken its toll.

While he hailed the business done so far in 2016 as "the first normal year of registration since pre-recession times", he warned:

"There's no doubt that we're not unaffected by the confusion and concern that Brexit has impact.

"It's very likely that we'll be adjusting our view of next year to be a bit more caution. And I think it will be fairly flat next year from the point of view of growth."
