Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 (€225,400) to Kesha after a judge in New York ruled that the singer could not be released from her contract.

The 28-year-old took a case against her producer, Dr. Luke, real name Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald in 2014 as a result of her claims that he physically and sexually assaulted her. She also claimed that on one occasion, he drugged her and she woke up afterwards, naked and unsure of where she was.

In an effort to be allowed to record new music outside of her contract with Sony, she sought an injunction on her contract with the company, with whom she has a five-album contract.

In handing down her verdict, Justice Shirley Kornreich said "you're asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry", but reserved to rule on the allegations of assault until Kesha's lawyers were able to provide more evidence.

On Sunday evening, just days after the verdict, Taylor Swift has joined a chorus of voices from around the world of music and entertainment backing the singer, and donated $250,000 to her "to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time"

Kesha broke down in tears when the verdict was read out in court, with Kornreich stating that she has been given "ample opportunity" to record music and her career has not been harmed.
