A man has been charged in connection with the murder of Kenneth O'Brien.

“I’m responsible for killing Kenneth and I gave a true account of what happened” – those were the words of Paul Wells to Sergeant Gerard Moore this evening after he charged him the murder of Mr. O’Brien at his home in Finglas on or about January 15th or January 16th.

Mr O'Brien's torso was found in the canal at Ardclough in Kildare last month. He had been shot dead.

Wells, 48, was arrested last Saturday, and appeared before Dublin District Courts at six o'clock this evening in connection with the death.

Some of Kenneth O’Brien’s dismembered remains were found in a suitcase in the Grand Canal in Co. Kildare on January 18th. Other body parts were later found at another location along the canal.

Wells was one of two men arrested last week. The other was released without charge yesterday. He sat in the dock dressed in a blue hooded top and dark trousers and didn’t address the court.

Mr. O’Brien’s partner was also in court for the five-minute hearing this evening. Bail can only be dealt with before the High Court so Judge Anthony Halpin remanded him in custody for a week.
