The funeral mass of murder victim David Byrne has passed off peacefully, and his cortège then moved to a cemetery in Harold's Cross in Dublin.

The 34-year-old father of two was shot dead when an armed gang stormed the Regency hotel in Drumcondra ten days ago.

A lone piper broke the silence that befell Francis Street as the funeral cortege snaked its way through the narrow streets of Dublin's south-inner city.

Mr Byrne's silver coffin emerged moments later on the shoulders of some of his chief mourners, who were dressed in navy and blue - a nod to one of his favourite sporting teams.

Hundreds then poured into the small grounds of the Church of St Nicholas of Myra, as uniformed gardaí stood guard outside.

Armed officers also patrolled the area and the garda helicopter kept an eye on proceedings from above.

The procession emerged from the church just after 2.00pm, and a fleet of black limousines followed Mr Byrne's hearse to a cemetery in Harold's Cross.

Before the funeral, gardaí said they were not expecting any trouble and everything has so far passed off peacefully.

Their attention will soon turn to policing the funeral Eddie Hutch Senior. The brother of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was murdered at his home last week.

Conor Feehan, journalist with The Herald and Independent newspapers, earlier described the growing garda build-up.
