Using AI to read your palm could put a number of apps you use at risk of being hacked, a technology journalist has warned.

Recently, Ciara O’Brien of the Irish Times decided she wanted to see how well ChatGPT could read palms.

However, she soon became concerned about what the site asked her for.

“It needs a detailed picture,” she told Moncrieff

“So, it needs something that has good light that shows your whole hand.

“That would basically mean that I have handed over a very detailed photograph of the thing I use to authenticate my phone on a regular basis on my banking apps.

“So, you'll have to excuse me if I'm slightly cynical.”

Instead, Ms O’Brien used a stock image of someone else’s hand and asked ChatGPT if it could predict the palm owner’s future.

“It takes all the information that it can find online,” she said.

“The first kind of attempt was very generic - so you have to be specific.

“If you are going to do this, you have to tell it to avoid kind of generalisations because otherwise you're going to get, ‘Oh, you know, you will find love and, ‘You will have a long and healthy life’ - all very bland.

“If you ask it to be more specific, it will basically tell you stuff about the headline , lifeline, and visible gaps.

“Palmists would usually read this as somebody who asserted their independence early rather than relying heavily on family approval.”

Despite this amount of detail, Ms O’Brien noted that many will feel AI can never replace a human being who can look at a person and sense something about their soul.

“Palmistry is something that is an art and that people spend lots of time and effort perfecting,” she said.

“There is a human element to that, that AI can't replicate.

“I know we keep talking about artificial intelligence taking over certain tasks - it's still not human and it's not going to be there for another little while yet.”
