Waterford FC temporarily laid off their players and staff on Monday, and striker Graham Cummins will now be seeking alternative employment with no certainty over a resumption of the season.

Suirside native Cummins has a young family and while the search for a new job may be daunting, he told Newstalk Breakfast that it's essential.

"If the season is over, I can't wait nine months without going again. I'll be 33. I know it's not an injury, but you are still out of football, out of action for nine months. Again, at the same time, looking for a job in this kind of climate, it's not going to be easy. It's not being unhappy about going into a different sector job, it's the toughness of trying to get one.

"This is the best job I am going to have in my life. It is a bit up in the air what's going to happen after this. At the same time, you need to work as well. You need a new future. I do look at the journalism, I do have a business degree before I started playing football.

"In the current climate, it's going to be very tough for lads to get jobs. For me, I would definitely be thinking it's something I have to be looking for right now. I can't see League of Ireland resuming any time soon and you can't been sitting at home, twiddling your thumbs, being naive, going 'sure we'll be back in two months, three months'."

The FAI are currently engaged with the NLEC and the PFAI about potentially holding matches behind closed doors when safe to do. Cummins sees that as being a long way off.

"As long as we were getting paid, I always felt there's a possibility, but I spoke to Mark McNulty - the Cork City goalkeeper, I did an interview with him. He said the same about clubs, once St Patrick's Athletic stopped paying their players, he said that was a big indication for him that it was going to end and that this league wasn't going to resume any time soon."
