Picks of the week

 

Rillington Place, Tuesday, BBC One, 9pm

A chilling three-part drama, Rillington Place is based on the real-life multiple murders carried out by John Christie in Notting Hill in the 1940’s and 50’s. The subsequent tragic miscarriage of justice, which led to Timothy Evans being hanged for a crime he did not commit, contributed towards the abolition of capital punishment in Britain.

 

Imagine...Serial Killers: The Women who Write Crime Fiction, Tuesday, BBC One, 10.45pm

Alan Yentob explores the world of female crime fiction in the company of some of its best-selling authors, including Patricia Cornwell, Val McDermid and Paula Hawkins - the newcomer whose The Girl on the Train was the breakout hit of 2015. 

 

The Joy of the Single, Friday, BBC Four, 9pm

The Joy of the Single is a documentary about rock's first and most abiding artefact - the seven-inch, vinyl 45-rpm record. Featuring contributions from Noddy Holder, Jack White, Richard Hawley, Suzi Quatro, Holly Johnson, Jimmy Webb, Pete Waterman, Norah Jones, Mike Batt, Graham Gouldman, Miranda Sawyer, Norman Cook, Trevor Horn, Neil Sedaka, Paul Morley, Rob Davies, Lavinia Greenlaw, Brian Wilson and Mike Love.

 

The Cult that Stole Children - Inside the Family, Tuesday, BBC4, 9pm

An  investigation into one of Australia's most notorious cults, and the scars its survivors still bear today. Anne Hamilton-Byrne was beautiful, charismatic, delusional and damaged. Convinced she was a living god, Hamilton-Byrne headed an apocalyptic sect dubbed The Family, which was prominent in Melbourne through the 60s and 70s. With her husband Bill, she acquired numerous children - some through adoption scams, some born to cult members - and raised them as her own.

 

Film of the week

Rebecca, Saturday, BBC2, 1.30pm

Alfred Hitchcock's first American film, Rebecca is a psychological thriller based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier. Mrs. Van Hopper meets Maxim de Winter in Monte Carlo and the couple get married before she moves back with him to his large country estate - 'Manderlay'. On arrival though, the servants are less than friendly with her
