Rafael Nadal defeated Lukas Rosol 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 after coming back from a set down in the second round of Wimbledon.
Neither player compared the match to the epic five-setter they played two years ago but say every match is a new one. In 2012 Rosol, then ranked 100 in the world, played one of the greatest sets in the history of tennis to finish off Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon but this time Nadal can rest easy knowing he will advance to the third round.
World No. 4 Roger Federer also advanced to the third round of the tournament after defeating Gilles Muller in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. Federer will take on Santiago Giraldo of Columbia in the next round.
Switzerland’s other hope ,Stan Wawrinka, had a little more difficulty in his second round match against Yen-Hsun Lu . The World No. 3 was pushed to a fourth set but defeated Lu 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to advance in the tournament.
American, John Isner reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career after defeating Jarkko Nieminen 7-6, 7-6, 7-5.
Isner holds the record as the winner of the longest match in history against Nicolas Mahut. The match lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes, played over a three day period, and ended at 70-68 in the fifth set of the first round at Wimbledon. Isner will be playing No.19 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain in his next match.
Milos Raonic of Canada and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France defeated their opponents with ease and will advance in the tournament. Tsonga will play the No.1 seeded player Novak Djokovic in the third round and Raonic will play Lukasz Kubot of Poland.
In the women’s draw Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivonovic, Eugenie Bouchard, and Serena Williams won in straight sets and advance to the third round.
