Will Andy Murray defend his title as Wimbledon champion?
The Scot lost to Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the semi-final of the French Open this past weekend, falling in straight sets at 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and 40 minutes. Nadal hardly needed to break a sweat watching Murray chase after his violent forehands.
This loss was unexpected and shocking after his performance in the quarter-finals against long time rival Gaël Monfils. Murray let his two set lead slip away when the French favorite came back in the third and fourth sets at 4-6 and 1-6.
When it was looking as if the Frenchman would make it to the semi-finals, Murray won the last set at 6-0.
Murray fans say that he still suffers from his back injury and mention the fact that he has been without a coach for nearly three months. Making it to the semi-final at Roland Garros with no coach and a lingering injury is a triumph in itself. With that in mind, fans will look forward to seeing him at his best on the grass courts at Wimbledon.
This week Murray announced Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach just weeks before the start of Wimbledon. She is a former women’s tennis champion with titles from Wimbledon and the French Open. Murray hopes the Italian coach will lead him to win his second Wimbledon title.
Murray defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets last summer while under the wing of his last coach, Ivan Lendl and he is the favorite for the Grand Slam.
But with other players such as Nadal that are coming off huge wins such as the French Open, they have a good chance of winning Wimbledon, especially as the grass courts are unlike any Grand Slam court.
Watch out for Roger Federer who will be a contender as well as Swiss compatriot Stan Wawrinka.
Wimbledon coverage begins on Monday, June 23rd.
