James Redford has worked in the film business in The United States for decades but this is the first time he has turned the camera on his own family.

'The Big Picture' tells the story of dyslexia, dispelling myths, exploring solutions and featuring famous dyslexics including Sir Richard Branson and Robert Redford’s grandson and James’ son Dylan.

Speaking to The Green Room, Redford said it was difficult to turn the spotlight on his own family.

 “We’re not the Kardashians. The idea of sharing didn’t come easily to any of us but my son has a remarkable point of view on dyslexia. We really feel like this message has to get out there.”

James Redford has worked behind the camera for many years first as a screenwriter and in recent years as a documentary maker.

He didn't follow in his father's footsteps in terms of acting and his career on the stage ended early.

 “My acting  career ended at the end of 13 when I was in a stage production of The Canterbury Tales and my wig fell off on stage.

 It was a fairly traumatic moment and I realised then it (acting) probably wasn’t on the cards for me.”

Robert Redford (77) returns to our screens shortly in a new film All Is Lost directed by J C Chandor (Margin Call).

James Redford agrees the Redford clan are not for standing still.

 “We’re like a tribe of sharks, we can’t stop moving. It’s just a trait among us. We’re at our best when we’re engaged and moving forward”
