Being a head coach in the NFL is a tough job, especially when your team is struggling and needs a little bit of invention to try and get a win on the board, and sometimes one good trick play can give you a big psychological edge.

While many had hoped that the Colts might kick on a gear and their star quarterback Andrew Luck would cement his place as one the league's elite players, that hasn't quite happened yet, as they currently sit 3-3.

Their latest loss comes last night after the imperious New England Patriots rolled into town and beat Chuck Pagano's side 34-27, but the main highlight of the game was a truly bizarre fake punt play that ended in embarrassing fashion.

In an attempt to throw the defence off guard, they shuffled their entire formation across the field, leaving their wide receiver Griff Whalen as the centre that would snap the ball and safety Colt Anderson in as some sort of improvised quarterback.

What happened was they merely ended up exposing Anderson, who is swarmed by four or five defenders and pummeled for his trouble, while the fact that the rest of the team were off to the right also meant that it was an illegal formation and resulted in a penalty being called against the Colts.

The correct term for this is probably omnishambles.
