Unlike many Hollywood franchises, Mission: Impossible is a series that has only improved with time. The first was enjoyable but held back by overly busy plotting. The second saw John Woo achieve at worst something close to self-parody, at best something pretty forgettable.
However the series received an unexpected energy boost thanks to JJ Abrams - Mission: Impossible 3 was an exciting, perfectly paced thrill ride that made good on the potential of the series. And Brad Bird upped the ante again with Ghost Protocol, delivering some of the finest, most dizzying action sequences in any recent blockbuster.
Now Christopher McQuarrie - the fifth director in as many films, and following up Jack Reacher - has chosen to accept the latest mission, and by the looks of the first trailer he seems to be rolling with the breathless tone established by Abrams and Bird. Whether Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation will be quite as successful we'll have to wait and see, but definitely this minute-long glimpse at the continuing adventures of Ethan Hunt looks like it could be a blast.
