There were incredible scenes today at stage 12 of the Tour de France as a collision with a cameraman on a motorbike caused Chris Froome to be knocked from his bike.

The current Tour de France champion appeared to have surrendered his yellow jersey this afternoon with defeat on Mont Ventoux, after being forced to run for some distance up the mountain.

A replacement neutral bike was sought and delivered to Froome but he appeared to struggle with the gears and demanded another.

Thomas de Gendt powered to victory on the stage. After a jury decision, Froome hangs onto his yellow jersey.

"The crowd were all over the road and it was such a mess," said Australian Richie Porte who was involved in the crash alongside Froome and Bauke Mollema.

"I don't know what they're going to do but they're going to have to do something about it. That can't stand, some sort of discretion has to be used.

"It was just crazy."
