Sam Allardyce yesterday named his maiden England squad for the start for the World Cup qualifying campaign and omitted certain big names such as Jack Wilshire and Ross Barkley from the team.

West Ham winger Michail Antonio received his first England call-up, but another player who was missing from the squad which may or may not have raised eyebrows was young Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford.

The 18-year-old has been instructed to pick up international experience in the U21 side, but Allardyce went on to further explain why he had chosen Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and Daniel Sturridge over him.

"I think if he plays for Manchester United on a regular basis and was breaking into the United team then he would certainly be in my squad," he explained.

"But because of his inclusion only as a substitute, as good as it was against Hull City, I think the value of having a full game with Gareth [Southgate, England U21 manager] will be invaluable to him and then later on to us."
