Three of the Olympics' stand-out performers comprise the shortlist for the IAAF World Men's Athlete of the Year.

The four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah is on a three-man shortlist for the World Athlete of the Year award.

The British distance runner retained the 5,000 and 10,000 metres titles he won at London 2012 at Rio 2016 this summer.

He is joined by Usain Bolt, who achieved a triple, triple by winning a trio of sprint golds for the third Olympics in a row.

He won World Athlete of the Year in 2011, 2012 and 2013, having also won it in 2008 and 2009.

South Africa's 400-metre world-record holder Wayde van Niekerk is the third name on the list.

The 10,000 metre Olympic champion Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia makes the women's shortlist.

She is joined by double sprint champion, Elaine Thompson.

And Polish hammer thrower, Anita Wlodarczyk.
