Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong has been named as “a doper, dealer, and liar” by the US Federal Government.

The state is suing the former cyclist for damages on behalf of the US Postal Service, after Armstrong admitted to doping while cycling for the US Postal team. He won six of his seven Tour de France titles for the team before it was renamed Team Discovery Channel.

According to USA Today, US Justice Department attorneys wrote; "No sponsor who knew the truth about how Armstrong achieved his apparent Tour de France victories would have paid any amount of money to sponsor him or his team" in a 59-page document they hope will bring the case to court.

Earlier this year, Armstrong's attorneys tried to have the case thrown out of court, claiming it was essentially worthless to the American taxpayer.

The $100million figure comes from the US Government being entitled to claim back three times the amount of the $32.3 million Armstrong's team received from the US Postal Service from 2000 to 2004.

The 44-year-old was banned for life from cycling in 2012, and stripped of his seven Tour de France titles.
