One of the strangest aspects of this Euro 2016 final has been the mass invasion of moths.

They were irritating players and staff alike as they - the moths that is - went about their business at the Stade de France before and during the showpiece final between France and Portugal.

Referee Mark Clattenburg was seen swatting some away, France substitute Adil Rami had to take evasive action as some moths tried to approach him and one landed on Cristiano Ronaldo's face as he sat on the turf injured.

In the warm conditions, it turns out the decision to leave the floodlights on throughout the night before the game contributed to the problem as French football writer Philippe Auclair explains:
