Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden has torn his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

He suffered the injury in the United States' Gold Cup victory over Panama on Sunday night.

It is more bad luck for Holden, who has spent a lot of the past two years on the sidelines with knee problems.

The Scottish-born USA midfielder suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his breakthrough season at Bolton in March 2011, following a tackle from Jonny Evans.

Having worked his way back to fitness, Bolton's Player of the Year from 2011 spent another six months out due to cartilage damage not long after his return.

He returned to Bolton's first team in January but spent time on loan at Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
