Shane Lowry has made a slow start to the Wells Fargo Championship in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Offaly man carded a 3-over 75 to leave him well off the pace after Round 1.

The Irishman bogeyed the 5th, 6th and 8th as well as the 10th.

The high point of his round was a sole birdie on the 12th.

That score leaves him outside the Top 80, although there are challengers who have yet to complete their opening rounds.

Leading the way are Sweden's Alex Noren and Italy's Francesco Molinari who are both on 5-under.

Noren has completed his round which included six birdies and a bogey.

Molinari is still out on course having played 15 holes.

The duo are one shot clear of USA's Ben Martin who carded a 68.

Dustin Johnson who returned at Wells Fargo after missing the Masters after a fall on the eve of the tournament is in the mix in a tie for fifth after carding a 70.

Irish duo Graeme McDowell and Seamus Power have yet to tee off their opening rounds of the tournament.

Statistics suggest Shane Lowry is primed for Wells Fargo Championship
