Ireland have been dealt a huge blow ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Wales later this month, as Shane Duffy is to miss the game with a broken foot.

The Brighton and Hove Albion defender lasted the full match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, but manager Chris Hughton confirmed on Monday morning that the Derry-born defender had fractured a metatarsal.

Hughton added that Duffy will have an operation on Tuesday and is expected to miss at least six weeks. The news comes as a big blow to The Championship side, who are on course to be promoted to the Premier League this summer.

Duffy forced his way into the Ireland team during Euro 2016, starting the games against Italy and France. A late red-card against the French led to a suspension for the opening World Cup qualifier, but he started the following three games, including the win against Austria in Vienna.

The Derry defender has impressed for Brighton this season, since moving to the club last August, for nearly €5million. He has played in 31 league games for the team, scoring two goals.

Duffy's absence will give Ireland manager Martin O'Neill and unwanted headache ahead of the Wales game. John O'Shea or Richard Keogh will be expected to come into the team, in place of Duffy.
