Robbie Diack is the only uncapped player in the Ireland starting team for Saturday's test match against Argentina.
The Ulster forward has been named at blindside flanker for the game, while Connacht's Rodney Ah You and Kieran Marmion are also likely to make their Test debuts off the bench.
Schmidt says Diack has earned his chance.
"Robbie has had a good season. He's a very good lineout option. He's worked hard defensively for Ulster and he's carried ball pretty well for them as well. He went on the emerging tour last year, we had a look at that and we've tracked him through the season and we felt he deserved an opportunity," said the Ireland head coach.
Simon Zebo has won a recall to the Ireland team after being named on the wing and he is joined in the back three by his Munster team-mate Felix Jones, who has been preferred to Rob Kearney at full-back.
The Ireland team in full is:
15: Rob Kearney
