Rory McIlroy is two off the lead heading into the final round at the WGC Championship in Mexico.

The overnight leader started the day on 9-under after an excellent second round on Friday.

Although he remains well in contention for tournament victory, a more inconsistent third round meant he wasn't able to make use of his platform.

Instead American Justin Thomas  tops the leaderboard on 12-under, ahead of World No 1 golfer Dustin Johnson, who is one shot behind in second.

McIlroy is in a tie for third alongside multiple major winner Phil Mickelson on 10-under after picking one shot in his third round.

Starting the day with a birdie on the 1st, the Northern Irishman then bogeyed the next two holes to stall his momentum.

He then birdied the 6th, before a bogey on the 8th. However another birdie on the 9th set him for a less eventful back nine where a single birdie on the 11th was the highlight.

Further back, Jordan Spieth is on 7-under, while Sergio Garcia (6-under), Jimmy Walker (4-under), Hideki Matsuyama (3-under) and Rickie Fowler (2-under) are also among those who were out on course.
