Romania have given themselves a fighting chance to secure third spot in Pool D when they face Italy on Sunday after pulling off the biggest comeback in World Cup history.

Canada squandered a 15-0 lead against the Romanians at the Leicester City Stadium.

Gordon McRorie's penalty in the 11th minute was followed by DTH Van Der Merwe's try to give the Canadians an 8-0 lead approaching half time.

McRorie was unable to tag on the extra points, but his side looked in control and were aided after Catalin Fercu was sent to the bin in the 20th minute.

Just after the restart, Jeff Hassler charged through a number of tackles to cross the white wash and Nathan Hirayama was able to tack on the extra two, giving his side a 15-0 lead after 45 minutes.

The Eastern Europeans weren't going to roll over so easily and showed tremendous spirit and heart to drag themselves tooth and nail back into the contest.

First Mihai Macovei crossed in the 53rd minute to light a fire in the belly of the Romanians and they didn't stop there.

With Canada reduced to 14 after Jebb Sinclair's yellow card, they applied the pressure until Macovei added his second try of the match with six minutes remaining.

Vlaicu again converted less than two minutes remaining proved to be the hero, kicking a high-pressure penalty to seal the points, the match and the biggest comeback in rugby world cup history.
