An unofficial blue plaque commemorating the late comedian and actor Rik Mayall has appeared in London.
A Hammersmith Broadway resident has paid tribute to late comedic actor Rik Mayall with a makeshift blue plaque commemorating the time he 'Rik Mayall punched his friend in the balls on a bench near this spot'.

The iconic signs are usually of the 'born here', 'lived here' or 'died here' variety, but Mayall's unofficial one focuses instead on a slapstick moment.

The Essex-born actor, who starred in alternative comedy shows such as The Young Ones and Blackadder, died on Monday morning, with his cause of death is not yet confirmed.

The plaque's QR code links to the opening credits of Bottom – the popular sitcom starring Mayall, about two flatmates who live on the dole in Hammersmith, London – which ran for three series between 1991 and 1995.

In the credit sequence, Mayall actually does punch his co-star, played by Adrian Edmondson, in the balls.

The blue plaque system, which is currently closed, is paid for entirely by public funds and administered by English Heritage. Receiving a blue plaque carries an aura of seriousness and significance.
