President Michael D Higgins has called for 'serious analysis' of the various controversies which erupted during the Rio Olympic Games.

Incidents including boxer Michael O'Reilly's failed drugs test and the allegations that members of the Olympic Council of Ireland were involved in ticket touting, have marred the Games and somewhat deflected from the medal achievements of Annalise Murphy and the O'Donovan brothers.

The President held an official reception for Ireland's Olympic team at Áras an Uachtaráin today where he cautioned the need to asses the issues which arose in Rio, in order to preserve the Games for future generations.

"These Olympic Games have also exposed some serious issues, both here in Ireland and amongst the entire Olympic family. Issues of doping, questionable decisions made by referees and judges and the controversy around the administration of our sports all deserve serious analysis and fearless responses here at home and internationally."

It is reported that none of the boxers from Team Ireland attended the ceremony. Reports emerged over the weekend alleging that a boxer made 'inappropriate bets' during the Olympics. This practise is not illegal but is prohibited for Olympians under code of ethics guidelines.
