On this day 1998, an Ireland side lead by Brian Kerr made history and claimed glory as they won the UEFA European Under-18s Championship.

Having topped their group by beating Croatia and Cyprus, Kerr's side progressed to the final where they faced Germany, and won the title after a tense penalty shootout. Liam George slotted home the decisive final kick that set off some amazing scenes of celebrations.

The team that won included Robbie Keane and Richard Dunne, two players who went on to have impressive careers at the highest level, while the rest of the squad perhaps had more mixed fortunes. Stephen McPhail and Richie Partridge had some success in England, while others such as Jason Gavin and Keith Doyle spent the majority of their careers in the League of Ireland. Of course, there was also Gary Doherty, who garnered himself the nickname 'The Ginger Pele'.

While the paths traveled by the members of the squad were vastly different, for those few moments after the final, they were the kings of Europe together.
