One of the most important figures in the history of Liverpool football club, Bill Shankly, resigned in 1974 after an FA Cup win over Newcastle, a move that shocked fans and the board alike.

As it forms part of the archives at the Shankly Hotel, former Liverpool and Ireland player John Aldridge tweeted out the now historic letter that Shankly sent to the club announcing that he wanted to call it a day, and that he would appreciate it if the club could start getting things in motion on the payment of his pension as soon as possible.

While they weren't keen on losing their main man back in 1974, the club did of course appoint Bob Paisley to succeed him, and things went quite well for them after that.
