Aiden McGeady becomes the fourth Irishman in Everton's current squad after signing from Spartak Moscow last week.

But tonight on Off The Ball, Pat Nevin told us that he was surprised that Roberto Martinez chose to recruit him.

"I have to admit that was a wee bit of a shock for me," Nevin said. "I really did not see that one coming. I wouldn't have guessed he was a player that Martinez would have went for, purely because he is very well catered for in that area. You're looking at players that are creative like Pienaar, Osman and Mirallas...okay Barkley has an injury but he's got plenty there. Deulofeu's out injured and he's got to come back in that wide area and he's not too dissimilar a player to Aiden McGeady as well. I suspect somebody will move on, be it Jelavic or Vellios. One of them will move on and that will create space in the squad for McGeady."

Nevin added that McGeady has "one hell of a job" to get into the team ahead of Steven Pienaar who has a symbiotic relationship with Leighton Baines down the left flank."

Meanwhile, Nevin was commentating for us at St James' Park yesterday as Newcastle had a goal chalked off against Manchester City.

City have improved away from home in recent weeks but Nevin spotted a few lingering problems.

"The weaknesses were there to see and you can see the weaknesses quite obviously and not just in one area. There's not enough real class at the back beside Kompany. The two full-backs are really good going forwards but going the other way, there are weaknesses. Zabaleta looked like he was in big danger. That's an area they have to be concerned about."

Nevin also feels City will be in "big trouble" if they lose Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure, while he believes Chelsea look more "controlled" and like a "Mourinho team."
