Pat Nevin expects even more pain for Liverpool next season unless there is an enormous investment in the squad this summer.

Speaking to Off The Ball after yesterday's crushing 6-1 loss to Stoke, the former Chelsea and Everton midfielder feels the current Top Four are out of reach.

"They're a long way away from being a Top 4 side and I think they will be even further away next season if they don't add massively," he said.

With question marks, revolving around manager Brendan Rodgers, Pat thinks the transfer system at the club absolves him of a small amount of responsibility.

"If it was absolutely him buying all the players, then I would say 'Brendan, you've not taken it on at all'. I'm just not sure that is the case at Liverpool."

Pat also described Frank Lampard, who scored on his final Manchester City appearance against Southampton, as the "best one touch finisher I've ever seen" and also spoke about Newcastle's escape from the jaws of relegation.
