A consultant dermatologist has said that young people in their 20s getting Botox is “just a waste of money”.
Dr Clare Kiely said that while she “loves” botox and considers the treatment a “really safe” way to slow down the ageing process, it is not needed by everyone.
“The problem is Botox being pushed on younger and younger people,” she argued on The Claire Byrne Show.
“People having Botox in their 20s to me is madness, really.
“The reason people in their 40s and above are having it is to kind of stave off those signs of aging, that they just want to slow down and look as young as they feel, basically.
“But if you're having it in your 20s, you're having it to basically freeze your normal expression lines.
“The normal creases around the eyes when you smile, when you frown, all of those little bits of facial dynamics of how we communicate is so important and they just don't need it.”
Dr Kiely also warned people against taking advice from TikTokers without medical qualifications.
She noted that she graduated from college in 2004 and it took her a further 13 years to become a fully qualified dermatologist.
Since then, she has continued to train the discipline and believes strong that skin is a “complex beast”.
“Skin experts on TikTok probably haven't that much knowledge of skin biology,” she said.
“If you have a skin problem, especially something that like an acne or pigmentation… it can be have multiple causes..
“Even just seeing your dermatologist or a GP with an expertise in dermatology, just once, can set you on the right path.
“I've often seen patients who've come into me and they've said, Geez, I just wish I came to see you two years ago’ because the amount of money that they've spent.
“If they had just come and seen a dermatologist, we can diagnose things quite quickly and just by looking at them.”
